Harriet Berkal: Who Invited You ?

Feb 26, 2026

It’s swell having company come to visit and stay with you for a while. There is one exception to this. Those who don’t pay rent and wreak havoc on your property.

People are reticent to admit that either squirrels or mice – yes vermin, have somehow entered their property and one needs professional help to eradicate them.

It’s not a hygiene or unclean environment in your home that results in this scenario. They are nasty little creatures and are very determined to find warmth and food inside. They aren’t selective in which homes they enter. All bets are off that it only happens in poor homes. It’s everywhere.

Recently, we had a squirrel family selecting our property to chew through and landing above our basement dropped ceiling tiles. They went undetected.

We discovered the squirrels by a fluke accident. Never have we had frozen pipes. This year, during those viscously cold weeks we had some. This led to the investigation which started with the furnace company, then our plumber and finally the cold air, was detected, coming from a hole chewed from outside.

There were a ton of pine cones. I would say at least a garbage bag full.

Tricky to find a good exterminator at this time of year, as so many people are having issues with these little pests, who are determined to enter your premises. Don’t fool yourself thinking that spray foam will keep them out. They are a formidable enemy.

So I finally found one technician who was available and he was exceptional! He showed up right away and determined exactly what was required.

Breeze is his first name and he owns TERRA 13 pest control.

Not only was he efficient in finding the entry point hole outside, but he cemented it so that it will prevent future attempts.

The entire clean up was done by the high standards he places on his work.

He knows how pests operate and is innovative in his approach to quickly and expeditiously solve your problem.

He is going to come back in the spring to check out the rest of our perimeter.

Houses shift. This is when the smallest crack becomes problematic. And vermin never travel alone. So once you’ve got one, you can have an infestation in no time.

Having a pest free home is really important to me. It likely is to most individuals. They just make you feel violated.

I get great comfort knowing that I have enlisted a professional who is diligent and really wants to get to the heart of the problem.

It’s clear I wasn’t raised on a farm where maybe I’d have been acclimatized to nature. I’m a city girl through and through.

But even here surrounded by concrete, we encounter them.

Just for your interest, a bylaw preventing animals from roaming free came into effect in 1979.

  • The Pound By-law No. 2443/79 (1979): Before the current act, animal control was governed by this older by-law, which prohibited any animal from "running at large".
It was expanded to focus on cats roaming free.
cats cannot run free in Winnipeg. There was official bylaw established and expanded in 2013. Expansion of Cat Regulations (2015)www.winnipeg bylaws.com

In Europe you see cats in the streets as they help with the mice population.

I suspect, here in Winnipeg, exterminator business has picked up exponentially, when this legislation was enforced.

Maybe it’s time to sing: “ Who let the cats out ?” as they seem an essential element in the war against unwanted pests. Release them.

In the interim, if one needs an excellent technician, Breeze is your guy. I speak from personal experience.
