Old Jaffa
Feb 15, 2015
While in Israel, I've had the chance to photograph the old city of Jaffa, a significant portside city since the Bronze Age. This photo journey begins with Al-Bahr Mosque, overlooking the Mediterranean sea. Under the UN partition plan of 1947 Jaffa was to be included as part of an Arab state, but since Palestinian leadership and the Arab states rejected partition, the 1948 war ensued, with Israel taking control of Jaffa.
Jaffa is the scene of various stories from the Bible, and was part of the allotment of the tribe of Dan. King Solomon established his own harbour in Jaffa where he imported the cedars of Lebanon to build the Temple. Jonah, of "Jonah and the Whale" fame, began his journey to Tarshish in Jaffa, . This photo was taken through a restaurant window (which explains the glare at the bottom)-but I loved the angle looking down with the white dome, and the port.
