Michael Paterson was named Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Manitoba Chapter in late 2025..
When asked if he was surprised about receiving this philanthrpy award, Paterson replied, "I was shocked! The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) contacted me last summer and asked if they could put my name forward. I agreed, as it might help people learn a little about the great work the NCC does, but I never dreamed that I could win. I am involved with several organizations as a volunteer, but I have never thought of myself as a very effective fundraiser. The award is a testament to these great organizations as they make it easy to raise money for. As many people may also know, I am married to Gail Asper, who is the greatest fundraiser on the planet. She has helped and encouraged me and really, she is the one who is responsible for me getting this award. "
The Winnipeg Jewish Review asked Paterson which organizations he has been fundraising for, and whether he has been sitting on any boards. He replied, "I am currently on the board of the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg, and I am member of the Concordia Hospital Arthroplasty Research Committee. I very recently completed my most recent term on the Regional Board of the NCC. I have volunteered with the NCC fairly continuously since 2000 at both the regional and national levels, including 2 terms as Manitoba Board co-chair. I have also completed several terms on the board of Jewish Child and Family Services (JCFS), with whom I have volunteered since the late 1990s, including one term as Board Chair. I also fundraise for the IISD Experimental Lakes Area, where I have worked for 34 years."
When asked what about these organizations inspired him to volunteer, Paterson noted, "These organizations are doing amazing work and are making a difference here and now. I am deeply connected with the Jewish community in Winnipeg, and I especially want to help people that can’t help themselves, which explains my involvement with JCFS and the Jewish Federation. I have a deep love of nature, and I believe that our future quality of life, our economy, and our health depend on effective stewardship and protection of the environment. To me, the NCC is the most effective environmental organization for protecting land and waters in Canada. The IISD Experimental Lakes Area is a globally unique research facility located near Kenora that has helped to change regulations and best practices to protect freshwater around the world. Finally, I have 2 artificial hips that changed my life and I volunteer with the Concordia Hip and Knee Clinic because I want to help future generations benefit from new research on joint replacements, as I have done."
Paterson also indicated that "To be honest, I can’t say that I like or enjoy fundraising (sorry…)." but he also added that "All of these great organizations (and many more) need money to help make the world a better place and I do what I can to help. To be truthful, I feel like a fraud receiving this award as I have always struggled with fund raising and I have never considered myself anything more than the most average fundraiser. As I said above, the thanks should really go to Gail, who has pushed me and helped me to be a better fundraiser."
When asked which organizations he will be fundraising for in 2026, Paterson answered, "All of the organizations listed above, all of whom I have volunteered with for many years."
Paterson's also noted that "I encourage everyone to get involved with their community and to help out to the best of their abilities. The world can only improve if we all dig in and help. On a selfish level, community involvement is also deeply satisfying and rewarding."
