Dr. Chatterley will be teaching a new course for the Canadian Institute for the Study of Antisemitism this fall entitled Introduction to the History of Antisemitism.
Composed of nine classes, the course will run every Sunday for two months (excluding Thanksgiving) and is open to the public. It will provide a comprehensive introduction to the phenomenon of antisemitism and will combine lectures, film, and discussion. Reading suggestions will be provided to the class but there will be no required assignments or examinations.
The course examines antisemitism as a central phenomenon of western history. Together, the class will study its theological origins in the conflict between Judaism, the Jesus movement, and the early church, follow its development through the Middle Ages, examine its secularized forms during the modern period, focus on its central role in Hitler's ideology, and conclude with a discussion of contemporary antisemitism, including that of the Islamic world.
